Third Annual Councillor Naeem Patel's Awards for Academic Excellence Recognizes Top Achievers in Ward 61

The third annual Councillor Naeem Patel’s Awards for Academic Excellence took place this past Monday at Al Ghazali Hall in Erasmia, celebrating the exceptional achievements of matriculants from Ward 61. The event honoured the top performers across nine schools within the ward, highlighting the dedication and hard work of both students and educators.


The highlight of the evening was the recognition of the top three matriculants, all of whom hailed from Al Asr Educational Institute. Maseeha Omar claimed the top spot with an impressive 88.14% average and six distinctions, followed by Misbah Wahab with an 87.43% average and six distinctions, and Nuriya Alli with an 87.29% average, also securing six distinctions. Their outstanding academic performances set the bar high for future students.


In addition to the top three, the event celebrated the top 10 matriculants in Ward 61:

8. Zayaan Ebrahim (Tshwane Muslim School)

9. Muhammad Zuhair Abdoola (Tshwane Muslim School)

10. Mohamed Ali (Central Islamic School)


The evening also featured special awards acknowledging outstanding achievements in various categories. The Principal of the Year award went to Vilasen Padayachy of Himalaya Secondary School, while Amity International SA was named the Most Improved School of the Year.


The prestigious Legend of the Past Award by Nadia Peera Attorneys was posthumously awarded to the Late Imaam Abdool Gafoor, a tribute to his lasting impact on the community. The Legend of Ward 61 award was given to Waheeda Mahomed, a dedicated Mathematics teacher at Tshwane Muslim School, for her tireless efforts in nurturing young minds.


One of the most inspiring moments of the evening came with the presentation of the Perseverance Award by Mahdiyya Patel Attorneys to Amani Dawood, a student from Tshwane Muslim School. Despite being hospitalized for four months during her matric year, Amani defied the odds to finish at the top of her class.


The Top School of Ward 61 award was presented to Central Islamic School, recognized for its academic excellence and contribution to the success of its learners.


In a nod to the important role of community service, the Ward 61 Community Leader of the Year award was given to Zakiya Shaik for her dedication to local initiatives. Additionally, Laudium Disaster Management was honoured as the Community Organization of the Year for its exceptional work at times of crisis and support within the community.

Congratulations to all the winners—this is only the beginning of your bright futures!" Cllr Patel said.


Councillor Patel was honored with a prestigious award by the Palestinian Embassy for his support of the Palestinian people's struggle for freedom and justice. Presented by Charge d'Affaires Bassam Al Husseiny, the award recognized Cllr Patel’s efforts as a founder member and spokesperson of the South African Friends of Palestine. His dedication includes organizing marches, solidarity events, and multiple visits to Palestine, where he engaged in social work and supported local communities. Cllr Patel has also represented South Africa at international events like the UN International Day of Solidarity with Palestine and facilitated meetings between Palestinian Solidarity movements and the government.
