The Southern African Memon Foundation (SAMF) held its AGM on Wednesday 13th November 2024. The meeting coincided with the Foundation’s 40TH year of existence, having been founded in 1984.

Members gathered at the World Memon Foundation Hall at the entrance of Laudium. Outgoing President, Shabir Solly Joosub thanked all members for their attendance and ongoing support for the Foundation. He lamented that the past year had been a turbulent and brutal one for humanity, citing the crises in Palestine, Sudan, Somalia, Ethopia, Kashmir and elsewhere. He further observed the fact that the Foundation had forged close working relationships with other organizations and this had a positive impact in servicing communities at large.

Yaaseen Sakoor, Ebrahim Hassim and Mahomed Joosub also offered presentations on the various projects undertaken by the Foundation over the past year.

Among the highlights were:

• The Foundation’s ongoing food voucher program

• Winter Gas and Lamp Kits which reached 450 families in 10 areas

• Contributions towards a housing project in Somalia

• Large sum donations towards humanitarian work in Gaza, Somalia (Floods), Turkey/Syria (earthquake), Afghanistan (earthquake)

• Full sponsorship of new ablution facilities which replaced pit latrines at the Masimdumise Secondary School in KZN. Done in conjunction with the Gift of the Givers, the new facility encompassed 2 containers (for male and female), housing a total of 12 functional toilets which are linked to septic tanks and Jojo tanks. It is hoped that these new facilities would restore dignity to teachers and students of the school, who have been struggling for many years.

The meeting concluded with Yaaseen Sakoor being nominated as President for the next 2 years.
