South Africa mourns the loss of a distinguished political figure and a passionate advocate for social change, Dr. Essop Pahad, who passed away on 6 July 2023. As the former Minister in the Presidency under President Thabo Mbeki, Dr. Pahad played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa during a critical period of transition and development.


Dr. Essop Pahad's journey was deeply rooted in his commitment to justice and equality. Born into a family with a strong tradition of activism, he embraced these values from an early age. His father, Goolam Hoosain Ismael Pahad, was a leading member of the Transvaal Indian Congress and the South African Indian Congress. Following in his father’s footsteps, Essop joined the Transvaal Indian Youth Congress in 1958, and in 1962, he got arrested and was banned for five years. He went into exile in 1964. Despite these challenges, Dr. Pahad's unwavering spirit remained unbroken, and he continued to fight for the liberation of his beloved South Africa.


Following the unbanning of the ANC and his return to the country, Dr. Pahad's commitment to service took on a new dimension. As Minister in the Presidency under President Thabo Mbeki, he played a significant role in the transformation and development of South Africa. His astute political acumen, combined with his deep understanding of governance, allowed him to navigate the complex challenges of the time and contribute to the nation's progress.
