After an 18-month closure, the Rebecca Street Crematorium in Tshwane is set to reopen on December 2, 2024. The crematorium had been shut down due to operational and regulatory challenges, causing significant inconvenience for local families who had to travel to Johannesburg for cremations.

Yesterday, Tshwane Executive Mayor, Dr. Nasiphi Moya, hosted a public meeting to update residents on the facility’s refurbishment. The crematorium has undergone extensive upgrades to improve efficiency and meet environmental standards. Mayor Moya praised the collaborative efforts of the City and the Rebecca Street Crematorium Committee, a group of 15 community organizations that played a vital role in overseeing the renovation process.

The City has committed to a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to ensure the facility’s smooth operation. Mayor Moya thanked former Mayor Cilliers Brink, current officials, and the community for their persistence in reopening the facility.

"While the past 18 months have presented significant challenges, today marks an important milestone for the Rebecca Street Crematorium and the Tshwane community. It’s gratifying to see our collective efforts finally coming to fruition. This accomplishment is a testament to the power of collaboration, persistence, and holding the municipality accountable. We look forward to the continued service improvements and the positive impact these developments will bring to all those who rely on cremation services in our area." Dr. Murthi Sooboo told Laudium Today

The crematorium will officially resume operations on December 2, providing much-needed relief to Tshwane families who will no longer face long travel distances for cremation services.
