Professor Priya Soma-Pillay who is the Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Pretoria has been promoted and appointed as Head of the Medical School at the University.

In a statement, Prof C (Tiaan) de Jäger, Dean: Faculty of Health Sciences announced the appointment of Prof Soma-Pillay as Chairperson of the Medical School for the period 1 November 2022 - 31 October 2026.

Professor Soma-Pillay’s interest in obstetrics and gynaecology was sparked during her internship training as a medical doctor. “The birth of a baby is an important milestone in the human journey and as a doctor, I can play a significant role in this wonderful process.”

Today she heads up the Steve Biko Academic Hospital’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology division, where she transfers her medical and surgical expertise, and passion for women’s health to doctors in training.

Her career path started on a challenging note when circumstances pressured her into studying medicine at the University of Pretoria, where Afrikaans was the predominant medium of instruction at the time. “Afrikaans was my second language, but I decided to take on the challenge of studying in Afrikaans. The first three years were extremely tough,” she recalls. “But I had a solid group of friends who supported me.”

Her advice to young women is to lead a balanced, healthy lifestyle and never be discouraged by the many obstacles. “Education opens many doors for young women. Pursue a career that you’ll enjoy and work hard to be the best you can be.”

Professor Priya is the daughter of Mr Amarlal and Mrs Rooki Soma. Mr Soma is a veteran community worker and currently serves as the Treasurer of the Pretoria Legacy Foundation (PLF). He also serves on the executive of the Laudium Care Services of the Aged (LCSA).

Mrs Soma has also served our community with distinction and dedication for most of her life as a dedicated social worker.

The PLF joins the community, the University of Pretoria and the City of Tshwane to congratulate Prof Soma-Pillay on her great achievements and wishes her well in her new position.

The Foundation also extends its best wishes to Mr and Mrs Soma for the proud achievements of their daughter. They can truly be proud parents for this achievement.
