Pilditch stadium gets International upgrade

The City of Tshwane has officially launched the long awaited newly refurbished Pilditch stadium in Pretoria West.


The stadium was temporary closed in 2018 to start with the necessary upgrades to lift the stadium to new heights ensuring it becomes a world-class facility.


The highlight of the upgrade includes a synthetic athletics and training tracks that meet international standards certified by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).


The other upgrades to the facility were: 


• Installing a new irrigation system on the inner field and embankments

• Refurbish VIP area

• Replacing the grass for the field items

• Upgrade the long jump pits

• Upgrade the pavilion

• Replace the safety fence around the athletics track


Mayor Randall Williams said, “It’s critically important that as the City we invest in our sporting facilities as they provide opportunities for young people to develop their sporting skills.”


“We spent 34 million on upgrades to the stadium. It will be used as a training facility for professional teams, and this facility can be used by the community in the surrounding areas. I would also like to see schools using this stadium for sports and athletics events." He added.


Olympic Gold Medalist Castor Semenya showcased her skills on the track at the opening.
