The purpose of the event was to sensitise both officers and the community about how to notice the signs of mental illness GBV awareness.
SAPS held a mental health and GBV awareness campaign last Friday at the Laudium CHC in Bengal street.
This was done in partnership with Laudium CHC Psychologists, Laudium Mental Health and Community Oriented Substance Use Programme (COSUP).
Around 450 million people currently suffer from mental illnesses, placing mental disorders among the leading causes of ill-health and disability worldwide.
The World Mental Health has emphasised the importance of awareness and education around the symptoms of mental health disorders.
They were told about mental health anxiety and depression, their rights including medical treatment, social services on how to stay healthy, substance abuse, intervention rehabilitation, application of a protection order and reporting of abuse/crime etc.
The community were further encouraged to report any sort of abuse to the police without fear.
