On Monday, 18th July, the Foundation Phase learners at Central Islamic School celebrated Nelson Mandela Day.

Over the past month, the learners have been generously donating toys and blankets for our Nelson Mandela Drive. All the toys that were collected were arranged in Nelson Mandela’s prison number, 46664, to commemorate our former president. The learners also had their hands painted in the colours of the South African flag.

The message behind Mandela Day is simple. We all have the ability and the responsibility to make the world a better place for everyone in it. No matter how small your action is on Mandela Day, if every small action is performed with the intention to change the world, just as Nelson Mandela did, we can make a positive difference.

With this message in mind, our learners kicked off Mandela Day with a competition on how they can change the world with their own two hands. The winners had the privilege of accompanying the educators to hand out the toys and blankets to orphanages and underprivileged schools in the Laudium area.

Our councillor Mr. Naeem Patel and other members of parliament like MP. Mafta and ANC councillors from neighbouring regions visited the school to address our learners on Nelson Mandela’s contribution to the world and his dedication to ensure equal human rights for us all. They also applauded the learners for their donations and willingness to help the less fortunate.

These activities sparked an enthusiasm among our learners to continue trying to make our country a better place for future generations.
